So yesterday I started to do some research on the situation in South America and it seems like Peru and Ecuador have closed their borders due to Covid. I’m incredibly surprised as to how I’m taking this news in. 2 months ago i would have freaked out and probably would have called the trip off if i found out before i left. But here I am, 2 months on the road and I’m finding out my trip might end in Colombia and I couldn’t care less at all. I’m honestly not even bummed the slightest bit. This is a new marko for sure. I really know how to slow down and enjoy now.
When I get to Colombia next week I’ll just take my sweet ass time everywhere I go and really explore places. I’ll take a lot of salsa and spanish lessons which i’m excited about. I’ll go visit a lot of friends down there and really melt into the culture. If Peru doesn’t open up, I have no problem living in Colombia until April and then I would come back to New York. I’ll just have to come back down here in October and do it all over again which would work out great since I have even more time to explore South American and it wouldn’t be rushed like it might be right now.
I kept saying to Zach today how this is unreal. Our lives right now it’s too good to be true just hanging out here with nothing to do all day. We played pool for a few hours while jumping in the pool every now and then to cool off. I went out into town to get a haircut today and a smoothie. I cruised over about 25 minutes north to another beach to maybe try surfing but the waves weren’t great. I went for a long walk on the beach and a nice swim. I went back to town where Zach and his girl were and hung out with them for a bit while they had lunch. I got some ice cream and walked around some more. Back to the hostel and signed up for a christmas eve dinner they were hosting so i’m just waiting around now for the food to come out at 7Pm. I uploaded a bunch of pictures and edited them so i’m all caught up with pictures for the last few days.
It’s so nice to just be relaxing after the last few days of hell. I’m excited to leave after tomorrow since I am getting my fill of San Juan Del Sur. It’s taking 4 full days but I’m happy with this pace. Im also super happy I found a lovely place to stay for Christmas with lovely people. I was super worried I wouldn’t be able to get a nice place for Christmas since everyone says all the good hostels get booked up a week or two in advance. They were wrong for sure! Im happy I found this place and on Christmas.
The evening was fairly quiet. We all ate dinner at 7pm and then played a game of shithead for about 2 hours after. The first question I got asked at dinner after I told them I was from New York was “how many guys do you own”. Its insane how many people have so many things to say about Americans and guns. Im going to start replying with as many guns as my family owns in Serbia. They try to make us feel like outcasts with guns I don’t get it. its like you get looked down upon for even owning a gun for hunting. But in so many other countries people have so many guns for hunting and its not looked down upon. Ugh its so annoying and weird. God forbid we own guns to hunt and eat the same food they just paid for that they’re eating right in front of me.
We had a fun game of shithead for a few hours and then I called it a night. Excited for another relaxing day of lounging in the pool for Christmas tomorrow!
