Day 25 11/20/2021
Odometer – 26,800 – 26,806 ——6 Miles Today (4,106 Miles Total)
Puebla, Mexico
I got to sleep in a bit today which was nice for a change. I texted grandpa Yak last night and he got back to me this morning. I asked him a few questions about my emotions on this trip and where I was going wrong. I’m actually going to post what he texted me this morning which was really helpful and what I needed to hear! I asked him why I’m not having as much fun as I think I should be having.
1st and most importantly I learned to enjoy my own company, talking to myself, being with myself and just figured out how to like and appreciate myself more.
2nd my best experiences were not so much fun or exciting. They were probably conversations I had with people. Random people who I may have sat and talked with for an hour or a few days.
3rd, the beauty of it all man.The fucking landscapes that are so incredible they make you wanna cry, the beautiful people who want to help you when they have nothing, the way you see families and communities live so strongly together(especially compared to here).
4th the confidence to figure anything and everything out everyday. That trip was riddled with difficulty, fucked up roads and maps, crooked govt, landslides, mudslides, earthquakes, poverty, fucked up border crossings. Days of rain with nowhere to sleep easily. That’s the adventure man. That’s the stuff that when you come home and second guess yourself or feel full of shit about who you are, you’ll remember. You remember that and then know you can do anything always if your mind is right and open.
And as I keep telling you, listen to the voice. The world will speak to you. Not the voice in your head but the outside voice of everything.”
I’ll give it to the guy. He gives some pretty solid advice. Thanks Gramps. I read what he wrote about 10 times over and thought about it all day long. There’s been a lot on my mind since I left and at times nothing at all in my head on those long rides with no one but myself and the thoughts in my head! Everything he mentioned I’ll sure be thinking quite a bit about them from here on out!
As I thought about it today, I feel like everyday should be a wild adventure. but it’s not supposed to be. It’s supposed to be my own regular life except it’s not in brooklyn anymore. Its in other countries on a motorcycle. Some days will be boring, some will be rough, some will be wildly fun, some will be just running errands and others, just a regular day. I tried to implement it today. I woke up and went to a Saturday morning crossfit class. I had to spend some time today looking for a laundromat to get some clothes washed, ate some food and walked around for a few hours. I went back to my room to take a nap and watch a movie, got out for dinner, picked up my laundry, downloaded adobe lightroom to start editing photos and learn some more spanish and that was pretty much my day. Nice and relaxing doing whatever i want with no anxiety thinking or feeling like i had to go out and see as much as possible or i was going to miss out. It was a nice change for once to just slow it down and relax. We will see how the rest of the trip goes! hah
On my walk around the city today I did some googling. Some pretty delicious liquor they mix with fruit and cheese at a shop called La Pasita. if you guys are ever in Puebla you have to go! I also went to a street called “street of sweets” where I tried a bunch of local baked cookies. If you guys ever come here you need to try Tortitas De Santa Clara cookies as well. It’s Saturday so there were a ton of streets filled with little shops on the sidewalk selling all kinds of things and people playing music everywhere. After my nap I went up to a fancy restaurant a few floors up and across the street from the cathedral in the old city center. The tuna tartar was melting in my mouth! I’m also adding some pictures I took of the city today with my drone!
A guy I met at the gym today found me on the gram and right before he left I was looking at his profile and saw him diving into some pretty clear blue water so I chased him down and asked him where it was. He showed me on the map and it’s about an hour south of here. I guess tomorrow i’ll pack up and get out there looking for this waterfall which is about a 1 hour hike off the road in a little village in the mountains. I think I’ll camp somewhere after that as I have a 7 hour ride to Oaxaca. Well I’m going to edit some photos and maybe grab a few tacos and then hit the sack! Got a long day ahead of me tomorrow!
