Day 77

Day 77 1/11/2022

Odometer  32,062 – 32,464 —  402  Miles (9764 Miles Total)

Cartagena, Colombia – Medellín, Colombia

I woke up not very excited about this long ride today. I packed up in a rush and shoved breakfast down my throat, loaded up the bike, paid for my stay at the hostel and got on the bike. I have been bouncing between Waze and Google on this trip. Waze has been acting really funny lately with routes but they are usually way better with ETA than Google is. I looked into it a bit on my ride out of the city and noticed it was on the avoid highways option. I turned it off and It said I had a 9:46 ride to Medellin. Not bad. I think I might even be able to shave 1:30 off this ride even though Waze pushes hard with the ETA for fast drivers.

I finally remembered to put my earplugs in, I threw my shirt in the sink at the hostel to keep me cool and I was ready for this 10 hour ride. It was pretty hot and boring for the beginning. I slowly started to climb up into the mountains. Daniella told me not to wear my full gear since most of the ride would be hot but shit she was wrong. I stopped for lunch about 4 hours into the ride at a nice little restaurant on a mountainside. They spoke no English so lunch was sort of a surprise. I got a lovely chicken soup with another dish of rice and chicken with a salad, two cups of ice tea. It was delicious. Everyone was staring at my bike the whole time and trying to figure out where I was coming from. I went around the back of the restaurant and took some pictures of the mountains behind it.

I got back on the road and I kept climbing and climbing. My Garmin GPS said I was at 8500′. It got cold quickly. The temps went from 90 this morning to 50 very quickly. It even started to rain right after lunch. I pulled over after the rain got pretty bad and threw my pants and boots on. Now I was cozy and I was dry!  The roads were really slick and back before the rain I was causing through a town, I hit a wet spot and my rear tire kicked out pretty hard. I was almost high sided but thankfully I rode it out. The wet roads were very slippery on this side of the mountains. I was taking it easy remembering I just crashed a few weeks ago because of the rain. I stopped for a few pictures here and there. The scenery was so beautiful I was in heaven. The roads kept climbing into the mountains and at one point I rode right into the clouds where I was in thick fog for an hour or so. On the ride I saw a bad accident. A guy on a scooter without a helmet drove into the back of a pickup truck at about 40-50mph. The tailgate of the pickup was fucked. This guy bashed his head in and definitely would not survive. There was blood all over the floor by the time the ambulance came. I got the hell out of there I didn’t need to be around this. I can’t believe how many people here ride without helmets.

I pulled into Medellin at about 5pm or so. There was so much traffic but the temps were perfect at 70 degrees and it was cloudy while raining a bit. My bike was pissing me off again. It was running really really hot while I was doing about 20 in traffic and I had to keep turning it on and off to keep the temps down in traffic. It’s time I bring this thing to the BMW dealer here and let them take care of it. I’m sick of working on this coolant issue. The coolant flush needs two people really. One to work the bleeder screw and one to keep pouring coolant. I couldn’t quite do both when I was in San Gil. I’ll have to make a run to BMW in the morning and see what they say.

I got to my hostel and the vibe felt so good so I booked three more nights right off the bat. I dropped my gear off and put the bike on the sidewalk. I got on the computer and looked up things to do here. I found a salsa school in my area which is one of the nicer areas of Medellin. Thanks to the Dutch girls who recommended this hostel. I also was told to do the free walking tour of the city. So I signed up for that and it was tomorrow at 9:30am. I got in touch with a paragliding school to rent gear and fly over the city in the next few days.

I went for a walk to the salsa school to book some time. I ended up buying ten hours for the next few days at a good rate so I’ll be doing 2-3 hours a day of salsa. I went for a walk to a few bike shops since there were 10 in a row near the salsa school asking for help with some work on my bike and one of them mentioned a BMW shop down the block so I’ll be going there first thing in the morning. I went for a walk back to the hostel to work on the blog a bit and then I got hungry. I asked the woman at the hostel for some tips on where to get good food and she sent me to a place by the salsa school. I walked back up the hill and holy shit was this the best meal I’ve had in a long long time. A risotto dish with chicken, a Peruvian ceviche dish, a coke, a Pisco sour, and a wildly delicious fried Oreo with ice cream for dessert. I went back home and then got invited out to a little event the hostel had at a bar. Gringo Tuesdays. I went out and met some other gypsies like myself and we chatted until about 11pm and I decided it was time for me to go home. I was exhausted and ready for bed.

I’ve been having some issues with planning the rest of the trip which I might as well talk about now.

Peru has been closed for land travel since covid started. They opened for a week or two a few months ago and closed right back up. I don’t have any hope for them opening anytime soon. So a few guys i’ve been talking to have some ideas which they are moving on.

Option number 1. I can fly my bike in and out of Peru. Great. Except it costs $4400 to fly in and $4400 to fly out. So right off the bat that’s out of the question.

Option number 2. I can fly my bike to Santiago, Chile out of Bogota, Colombia for $4000 alone or if I find someone to share a crate with it’s $2600 each. Problem with that is if I fly to Santiago with the bike im pretty much already at the bottom of South America which is pretty stupid as the whole point was to ride all the way south. This means I would have to spend a week or two riding back up to Bolivia to at least check that out and then backtrack and ride south to Ushuaia. Paying $2500 to go ride out of the way for weeks is pissing me off.

Option number 3. Fly my bike to Bolivia from Bogota. But the problem with that is I would have to get my bike shipped from Bogota to Miami and then Miami to Bolivia. And the company didn’t even want to tell me how much that cost so I’m assuming it’s over $10K.

I was planning on riding to Ecuador and then finding a way to leave my bike in Ecuador or Colombia until October when I could come back down and hopefully Peru would be open to continue my trip. But after looking into it I can only do 90 day extensions on the visa for my motorcycle. if I don’t get the visa extended they will impound my bike and fine me when I try to leave the country with it. Also It looks like I have to be in Colombia or Ecuador when I apply for the extension so that means I have to fly back 3 times before I am able to head south with the bike. This is killing me

I talked to Jacki and she mentioned a good idea which I’m thinking about but it’s all lengthy. Ship my bike to Chile. Ride south to Ushuaia, and then ride up to Buenos Aires and continue onto Paraguay, Uruguay, and then Brazil which I had planned. After Brazil It looks like I can shoot right over horizontally to Santiago and then ride up to Bolivia and check that out. At that point I would pray Peru would be open or otherwise I’d have to leave my bike in Bolivia. Now this all sounds great but I have to do some research to make sure the roads going from Brazil to Chile are actually roads and not just desert with dirt roads because it’s about 45 hours of riding from what I see. Also I have to find out if Bolivia is able to hold my bike for 6-8 months in case Peru doesn’t open its borders in May so I can store my bike in Bolivia to come back in October so I can ride all of Peru. If I can do that then I would finish my trip back in Colombia and fly my bike back to NY in 2023. Or I might just ship it back to Europe and have two bikes in Europe since it will be worth more money there.

So I’ll have to wait to see what Spencer says as I got a quote for two bikes and hopefully we can ship together. He’s a Canadian that’s a bit ahead of me right now.

A beautiful view on the ride up into the mountains before I entered the clouds.

Day 76

Day 76 1/10/2022

Odometer  32,052 – 32,062 —-  10  Miles (9362 Miles Total)

Cartagena, Colombia

I extended my stay one more day here since I didn’t get to see too much of Carta the last few days with how busy I’ve been. I slept in a bit this morning and went right to Crossfit for the 10Am class. It was supposed to be a group class but then they asked me if I could do it alone because no one else showed up. I did my warm up and they were about to start the clock for me but then asked me if I could wait for someone else to warm up and get on the clock too so I waited another 5 minutes. Right when he was done another person showed up. it’s funny how not on time anyone ever is down here! hah. Good thing I wasn’t in a rush. These people are absolutely fucking brutal. I couldn’t even finish the workout with the heat and how bad my quads hurt from the Saturday class. I was absolutely burnt out. I tried my best and collapsed at the end. I went to the hostel and slipped right into the pool to cool off.

I took a shower and went out into the city for a huge breakfast. Once I was stuffed I went for a walk to the cafe on the other side of the city to get that caramel volcano chocolate cake I got with the girls the other day. Jesus christ i’m going to miss this thing once I leave it was so good. I must have sweated out a liter of water between walking for breakfast and dessert. I got back to the hostel and I decided it was time to change the oil on my bike. I was doing it 1500 miles sooner than I needed to but since my coolant boiled in Guatemala I wasn’t sure if it damaged the oil at all so I was going to change it. I found some old big water bottles in the trash and I got lucky with all of that to make the oil change easier. I got it all done in about 25 minutes in front of the hostel while melting in the sun. I was hauling this oil around since Panama so I was happy to get the weight out of my bike as well.

Once I did that and cooled off I decided to just lay in the hammock at the hostel and try to nap. I was exhausted from the gym and not being able to escape the heat all day. My body needed to rest. I laid in the hammock for a few hours and then decided I would go out for lunch. First I went out to try to book some salsa classes for the night but after walking around for an hour and going to three different locations since they moved a few times I found out they were closed. Bummer. I went back to the street area with two large cups of lime and mandarin juice from a street cart. I went into the old city to walk around and take pictures and then walked back for another arepa with more juice and I went back to the hostel. I worked on the blog for a bit and did the whole picture thing.

I went back out to the center for some more food, ice cream and snacks and just hung out alone for a while. I’m ready to meet some fun people and stick with them for a few days. I’m getting a bit bored. I made the decision to leave in the morning to go to Medellin. My GPS said it was going to be a 13 hour ride. Ugh this is going to suck. At least I had a few days to just chill out and not ride so I’ll be ready for this long ride. I’m calling it a night early so I can get up early to make it to Medellin.

A fancy block in cartagena

New city Carta

The Dutch girls sent me this picture. They were sitting next to the pool in Minca and Daniella recognized them from my Instagram pictures. What a small world!

Changing the oil on the bike. I was melting on the street it was so hot!

Best dessert ever.

Day 75

Day 75 1/9/2022

Odometer  32,010 – 32,052 —–  42  Miles (9352 Miles Total)

Cartagena, Colombia

The girls last night invited me to go see them at the beach today and I decided I would take them up on the offer since it’s so hot in the city here. I’m starting to realize that once I leave here it’s going to get cold very quickly in the rest of the countries I’m going to so time to take full advantage of the sun. I went downstairs to work on my blog while waiting for my breakfast to come out. While I was working on my laptop I heard this girl speaking Serbian on a phone call with her mom. When she hung up I said good morning in Serbian and I saw the look of terror on her face. She was thinking oh shit did I say something I wasn’t supposed to since I didn’t think anyone could understand me. haha

We chatted for a bit. Her friend popped up. They were from Montenegro but live in Amsterdam now. I was actually talking to them while working on the blog yesterday and of course the topic came up quickly between the both of them and other people about Americans. It never ends. I loaded up the bike and headed down to the beach while stopping for a bunch of water because the girls didn’t have any down there and everything was too expensive. The ride was 56 minutes but I got there in 35 with the stops. I parked on the dirt road before the parking lot hoping I wouldn’t get a ticket or my bike stolen or something. The girls said it was a 35 minute walk to their hostel on the beach so they got moving. As soon as I got to the water to start walking their direction I couldn’t believe this water. It was some of the nicest water I have ever seen in my life. I was not expecting this. I was so happy!

I made the walk down to them pretty quick and met up with them at this hostel. I dropped my stuff off in their room while they ate breakfast and we went for a long swim since it was so hot. The water was so clean and blue I wish you all could see it. Once we got done swimming we decided to go for a long walk to the other side of the beach. We stopped for some food and Josefine started bargaining for prices. My god is she freaking good at it! We got a red snapper for nearly the same price as Danielle got us in Santa Marta on the beach. The food came out in about 5 minutes and we stuffed our faces. Saskia is a fancy eater and hasn’t ever used her hands before to eat food. I told her to drop the shit and use her fingers. I taught her how to eat a fish the right way since she was a bit slow at it! Sorry Saskia! haha

We devoured every piece of the fish we each had and then went for a swim to clean our faces off. We went for a long walk to the end of the beach where there were a bunch of boats parked. We swam in the water for a while. The girls got up on my shoulders and stood up and jumped off. They were having so much fun. Josefine just broke up with her boyfriend of 4.5 years two nights ago and the last two months of her trip have been some lows from what Saskia told me. It was nice to see her forgetting about all of that and just having a blast. Saskia said she hasn’t seen her smile and laugh like this in a while.

We got some ice cream on the walk back. I got two cones of course and the girls love how I get double dessert everywhere we go. We finished the walk back to the hostel and got to lay down. Josefine came out for a swim with me and we were trying to balance on rocks in the waves. She said she needed more core strength so I took her to the beach after 30 minutes in the water and gave her some ab exercises to do. She loved it and hated me for it. Saskia was just lounging around reading her book the whole time. They started bargaining with a guy that would take them on a plankton tour later on in the night time. Jesus christ these girls have no shame in bargaining it’s the funniest thing ever to watch.

We went out for some more food while we watched the sunset on the beach and took some pictures. We chatted for a while over dinner and then before it got dark we parted ways. I’m going to miss these Dutch girls! We might be able to meet up in Ecuador in a month if the timing works out though so that would be nice. I made the trek back to my bike and had to deal with a ton of traffic of 4 million people leaving the beach. It was an eerie ride home since there was nothing between the beach and the city for the most part. I got home safe and jumped in the shower. I ran downstairs to work on the blog a bit before I was going to get some street food and before I knew it I made friends with two people.

Alina is from Canada but lives in Chicago now so we took a ride into the city center to get some street food which she was skeptical about. Once she saw the line for the place that had Arepas she was convinced it was good. We chilled out on the sidewalk for about 30 minutes waiting for the food to be done. Of course like everyone else we chatted about all kinds of things. We got our food which she ended up loving and went to get some ice cream. We took a long walk to the other side of town to the new city center which was surrounded by a huge stone wall which we got on top of and walked around for a bit. It was getting late so we decided to head back. Maybe 5 blocks from the old center where everyone hangs out I noticed a man with a really really nice clean ironed white shirt. He was dressed really nicely.

Something felt weird about the way he was walking. He was walking ahead of us but pretty close to my side and it was sort of aggressive in a way but not really. I kept an eye on him for about a block. Another block later he was doing the same thing but walking sort of sporadically one second in front of me the next behind me. I put my hands in my pockets to protect my phone, keys and wallet. I didn’t say anything to her as we just kept walking. He did this for about 5 more blocks. At one intersection I acted like we were going to turn and he did as well. Ok this is getting a bit weird now. We kept walking minding our own business. As we came to the center where we just saw a Michael Jackson performance while eating ice cream 1 hour ago I noticed he was there doing another one. There was a huge crowd around him so we were walking with a bunch of people surrounding us which were other tourists. We all turned left to go around the center and the white shirt guy was in front of us looking back at us. I grabbed her and stopped to turn right to try to get in the crowd to watch this guy do his performance. As I did that he stopped and started pushing through the tourists we just turned around from and started following us. I said to her there’s a guy following us for the last 5 blocks and this is the third time he’s changing directions to stay with us. I pushed her through the crowd and we walked to the left and I told her to sit down in an open area in front of the crowd. We sat down and I explained to her what just happened and I looked back near the opening we just snuck through. I see white shirt guy with his arm around a guy wearing a blue shirt and he starts to whisper in his ear and he’s pointing at us. I stand up and make eye contact with them and stare them in the eye to let them know I see them. I stare at them for about 10-15 seconds and they’re staring right back. Well fuck

Blue shirt guy starts walking over to us and gets behind us. I grab her and lift her up and we walk right in the middle of the performance and out the other side. I tell her to go to a bar across the street and we will go inside if they come over to us. We waited out front for about a minute while I was scanning the crowd for them but I lost them. Two people walked up that she knew from another hostel and she explained to them what just happened. I gave her my phone keys and wallet and I walked back into the performance to go look for them. I really wanted to see what they were going to do since I didn’t have to worry about the shit in my pockets falling out if something happened.

I walked back into the crowd looking for them but nothing. They were gone. I went back over to her friends and her and we decided to go for a walk. We walked a block over and ended up hanging out there till 1Am just chatting about so many things. They gave me a lot of places to visit in Colombia which I was happy about. I got pretty tired and they walked us back to my bike where we rode back to the hostel. I parked my bike inside and said goodnight! I haven’t had an adrenaline rush like that in a while. Those guys really had me jacked up. I wonder if I will see them tomorrow night since I’m pretty easy to spot here. We will see what happens.

Me and the girls before we parted ways!

Day 74

Day 74 1/8/2022

Odometer  32,000 – 32,010 —–  10  Miles (9310 Miles Total)

Cartagena, Colombia

I made plans last night with the girls to go to the food market in the morning for breakfast. I got up a bit late and enjoyed laying in bed and went downstairs for my free breakfast cutting it close to my 9am Crossfit class I was going to head out to. I made it just in time but with a full stomach. The class was stupid hard and I knew this was going to hurt. I hung out for a bit waiting around since every class always starts late. I partnered up with a guy and we hit the workout hard. We almost finished but didn’t make it. I realized it was Saturday after class was over and it all made sense to me. Saturdays are the hardest classes at these damn gyms. I wasn’t prepared for this!

I hung out for a bit after class and talked to some people while stretching and doing a little ab workout as well. I put my helmet on my sweaty head and headed back to the hostel to meet the girls. I worked on my blog for a little while waiting for them to get ready and then they disappeared so I decided to head down to the market at 11:30 or so to check it out before we all went down. I pulled up and it wasn’t nice at all. Just more fruit stands like you see all over the city anyway so I got in touch with them and told them it wasn’t worth it. I got back to the hostel and we decided to walk into the old city to get some food there. Little did I know I was about to be hanging out with these girls until about 8Pm.

We walked down to the old city and ended up sitting down for some street food. We got ceviche, I got an arepa I tried to get last night but they forgot about me and I didnt want to wait any longer. The girls got some coffee, I got some cups of lime juice mixed with mandarins. It was so hot out I was covered in sweat and my shirt was soaked. We sat down on the sidewalk with a bunch of food and drinks and stuffed our faces. We chatted and chatted and chatted about all kinds of things. They admitted I was the first American they have actually talked to or enjoyed talking to since of course no one likes Americans anywhere! hah. I feel so special.

It was nice having some deep conversations with someone. It’s been a while since i’ve done that. After we got done eating we walked over to this delicious cafe where they have some incredible pastries, cakes and desserts along with the best coffee I think they ever had. We sat down and I ordered a chocolate cake with some caramel chocolate cake as well with some coffee. We were in heaven. We talked about life in the states vs life in Europe. We talked about psychedelics. We talked about where we have been and where we’re going next. They had a lot of interesting questions and thoughts. It was so much fun talking to them. Josefien was 27 and she was a physical therapist, Saskia was 24 and she was just getting done with school. They were both from the Netherlands and Saskia actually lives two blocks from where I stayed in a hostel for a night before I visited my friend Adam in the Netherlands.

They were telling me their experiences meeting Americans on trips and Jesus fucking christ its insane how many bad things people have to say about Americans. Day after day after day. I didn’t think it was this bad but it’s really bad. They seem to think it’s America or the highway and everything is the best there, they never want to adapt to another country. I know people like this exist but I didn’t think they were the type to travel. I always thought 90% of these people stayed in the US and did not travel but boy was I wrong! Literally as I sit here typing this I just met two girls born and raised in Montenegro but live in the Netherlands now and after a minute they started talking about the same thing.

After we stuffed our faces with a ton of cake the girls wanted to go shopping for bathing suits. We were talking about watching the sunset at the castle here but it was a bit too cloudy for that. So I followed them around for a bit, taking a few pictures of the old city. While we were out and I was waiting in front of a shop I pulled out my phone and opened Facebook. There it was. Another fatality on the Base Fatality List. I scroll down a little bit and there’s some pictures of the legend Jimmy Pouchert. My heart hurt a bit. Jimmy has been BASE jumping almost as long as I have been alive. He was big in the sport and has been around and alive for so long you didn’t think he would ever die in the sport. But as always you got proved wrong thinking that way. Jimmy taught me how to BASE jump along with his wife Marta in 2008. Such a special bright soul he was. That news ruined my day and I was bummed to hear the news.

I talked to a buddy Jake to see if he had any pictures from our course we did with him so I could post something nice but he didn’t have any. Jake wasn’t in our course. He was in another one but hung out with our group when his course ended while ours was still going on so he was in some of our pictures. All of my pictures were on my hard drive at home. I always think about it but the group photo we have from our first jump course is turning into something other people always talk about. Most of the people in our picture are dead. At this point the only people alive are me, Marta, and this woman Cate who worked for NASA but quit BASE jumping a while ago. I was in California a long time ago on a trip with her and Brian who she learned to jump with. Brian died with 2 other good flyers on the same jump. The leader took the wrong turn flying between mountains and they had nowhere to fly out of to open their parachutes. They all died. Brian had bad head trauma and we thought he might survive but he didn’t. Cate quit shortly after that, I quit a few years later.

Would I be dead if I kept jumping and pushing it the way I did when I was younger? Most likely. Everyone dies doing this and it makes me hate some of my good friends that still jump. Do they think they’re better than the best people in the world? Do they really think they’re going to survive this shit if they didn’t? Little do they know but they’re not nearly as good as the ones that are dead. I mean these guys that died are some talented athletes. That mentality is what made me quit too. I started thinking about this all the time. Am I better than some of these guys that died? Not right now I’m not and if I’m not that what does that mean for myself. I’m glad that mentality worked its way into my head. Maybe its why im still alive right now. 13,500 skydives, 500 BASE jumps, a ton of dumb shit I have done and im still alive. Im happy with those numbers and quitting BASE jumping. It’s just not worth it anymore.

Anyway I tried to put those thoughts aside when the girls came out of the shop and not let the whole thing ruin the rest of my day. We walked around some more and Josefine and I decided to head back to the hostel while Saskia kept shopping. We got back to the hostel and she said her sleeping pad had a small leak in it and she asked me for help to test it out to send the company pictures of where it was leaking from so she can get a new one. 15 Minutes later I found the hole and patched it up so she was good to go with it for the rest of the trip. She was so thankful! It was such an easy fix how has no one fixed this for her yet! We hung out in the pool at the hostel and chatted about motorcycles and traveling for a while. Saskia showed up, they ate their dinner that they left in the fridge and called an Uber to get down to a beach about an hour away from where they were spending two nights. They invited me to meet them there tomorrow so I’ll probably go enjoy a beach day there since I should try to get darker than I already am! Hah

I took a ride into the old city and had a bunch of street food. Some girls bought me drinks while I was just sitting on the sidewalk eating my street food which cracked me up. I didn’t speak any Spanish so that was that. I had some ice cream, made some phone calls, ate some more food and walked around for a while. I got back to my hostel, laid down after having my sleepy chocolate potion I had last night and passed right out.

Just some shots of the girls for memories!

So the store I bought linen shirts from in Panama had a shop in Cartagena. I was looking for it while walking around with the girls. It’s called Portomar. I didn’t find it when I was out with them as I was looking everywhere. Today I’m editing pictures and  I can’t believe my eyes. Look at the top right corner. I WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT! HAHA

Day 73

Day 73 1/7/2022

Odometer   31,835 – 32,000 —— 165   Miles (9300 Miles Total)

Minca, Colombia – Cartagena, Colombia

I woke up sort of sad to leave Minca today but I was happy to not have to deal with the mosquitos anymore. I got up and had some free breakfast on the balcony overlooking the pool with another lovely view of the mountains nearby. I had a few cups of coffee and worked on the blog for a bit. I packed up, took a shower and headed down to Santa Marta to meet Daniella and Nick for a beach day. The temperature was so god damn hot down in SM I couldn’t believe it. It’s so bad to get around unless you’re in a car with AC. I found a beach Nick was talking about and parked my bike. It was a 15 minute walk to another beach over a small hill.

I hung out there for about an hour since it was taking them forever to get the rental car they needed for the next few days. I had intermittent service so after an hour I decided to walk back over to where they would park when they got there. I got back to them and they asked me if I just went for a swim. Nope, I was just sweating like this since I got into the city. It was HOT! We found a boat to take us to a private beach for the most part where they would pick us back up in about 3 hours. This was insane. We paid about $15 for a round trip boat ride to a private beach. We were hanging out there in chairs in the shade and swimming the whole time. Daniella talked to one of the guys there that was serving alcohol and food and he whipped out a bunch of fresh caught fish from a cooler. We each got a red snapper for $6 each. I couldn’t believe it. We all had a few beers and hung out on the beach eating snapper with rice and salads.

It was so nice hanging out with friends for the day even though it was only for a few hours. We got into a conversation about how life in New York is so much different than the rest of the world. As everyone says, we live to work in the states. That’s it. The rest of the world knows how to take vacation and time off from work, they know how to relax and enjoy life. Americans just work work work with barely any vacation to buy that big house with a white picket fence and the 4 new cars in their driveway. When they turn 65 they try to enjoy their life but are usually dying from a disease because they neglected their bodies their whole lives and then they try to travel but everything hurts too much to be able to travel. It’s such a bad trend people have in the states. It’s all people talk about on my travels. I’m glad I’m not one of them. I’m almost embarrassed to start telling people I’m American.

It took me 5 weeks to realize life isn’t about crunching so many activities into my day when I have nothing planned and to just relax. I was filled with so much anxiety the first 5 weeks of my trip because I didn’t understand what it was like to take a step back and relax every now and then. But now it’s all I want to do. If I have a busy day coming up it bothers me a bit. I’m getting used to it all though.

The boat guys came to pick us up a bit early and I was pretty sad to leave this little piece of heaven we found. We said our goodbyes back at the parking lot and parted ways. I might see them in Bogota before they fly off to Peru for a little bit. I put most of my gear on and off I went to Cartagena. This was one city I was so excited to see and it’s the one place in Colombia I feel like I would love. I typed in Carta on my GPS and it was almost 5 hours away. Ugh. I would get there at 7:30PM. A bit late into the night but I’m actually happy about it because of how hot it is outside. I’m actually going to start riding into the night some more here to help with the heat. I rode for about an hour and stopped for fuel and water. I poured water down my shirt and people were laughing at me. I was on a highway for about 40 miles right on the coast and it was so windy. The water from the ocean was blowing on me 50′ from the beach. The wind was literally almost pulling my helmet off my head. Maybe 15 times I had my hemet covering my eyes and I had to pull it back down.

I got to an intersection and it told me to make a right on a dirt road. Ok cool I hope this doesn’t turn bad I thought. It was trying to take me around a city with a lot of traffic I assume. I made a few turns on the dirt roads. I was pouring sweat as it was 96 degrees and now I’m only riding 15 mph in the dirt/sand. I had to wait 5 minutes for a huge train to cross the tracks at one point that I approached. So much for beating the traffic this way. I made a few more turns and I came up to a huge pile of mud/water covering the road. Fuck

I hope there aren’t 10 more of these and I hope I don’t crash. I was going to go through the middle because I don’t know what’s in there so I rode up along the edge. My bike got stuck in the mud a bit but I got out and I dropped the bike right on the edge of the water as I was getting out. My bike was covered in mud water from the back wheel spinning and my shoes were covered as well. I was pissed. I approached a few more of them and It was really killing me now as I had 1.5 more miles of this and I can’t cross 10 more of these with this heat and not wearing my moto boots along with how heavy this fucking bike is. I’m ok with this if it was cooler out but I don’t have the patience for it right now. I was so thankful to only have to cross about 5 of them and even more thankful that I didnt drop my bike in the middle of it. I got back on the road and kept riding.

I cut the time back off the arrival a lot and it looks like I wouldn’t be riding in the dark at all. I did some math with how many kilometers I had left and my speed and I actually might even make it for the sunset. I pushed hard on the rest of the ride and I made it to Cartagena with the sun about to set. There was a small sliver of clouds in the horizon and it split the sun right before it was about to set. It was beautiful. It was a perfect entrance to Carta. I got to my hostel and started taking off my pants as soon as I got in the lobby. The look on the receptionist’s face was priceless until she stood up and looked at my legs and noticed I was wearing regular shorts under my jeans. She laughed. I checked in and finally got a bunk bed that I didn’t have to climb to get into. Perks of staying at a place for three nights I guess!

I got on the bike and went into the old city center 1 km from me. I loved the vibe here. It was great. So many people, so much street food and I felt very safe here. I walked around for 2-3 hours and ate a bunch of food, ice cream and little things here and there. I think I’m gonna have to book more nights here. I watched some street music and performances which were nice. One of them popped up right in front of me when I was waiting for my food.

I got back to my hostel around 9:30pm. I made myself a cup of my Beam sleepy tea so I can get some sleep since I haven’t gotten much the last few nights. I keep waking up in the middle of the night. I drank my tea and took an edible. I met two young girls from the Netherlands that were in my room and chatted with them for about an hour about all kinds of things. My edible kicked in and I passed right now.

Day 72

Day 72 1/6/2022

Odometer   31,800  – 31,835 ——- 35  Miles (9135 Miles Total)

Minca, Colombia

Just waking up to another day in paradise I guess. My bed was pretty uncomfortable so I didn’t get to sleep much. I got up at 8am and walked right down to the river to jump in and “shower”. It woke me up straight away. I packed up my few things I had there, threw it in the topbox of my bike and went for a walk down to the breakfast place Im am a local at now. But first I stopped at the pharmacy to get a cream for the bug bites. The woman gave me something which I googled and it looked like it was for womens yeast infection. I asked her three times if it was for mosquito bite relief and she kept saying yes. I bought it and rubbed it on my legs. It worked a little bit but not enough.

I worked on the blog for a bit there but my breakfasts there might have to stop as it takes way too long for the whole thing. It took over 2 hours yesterday for breakfast and that’s getting a bit ridiculous. I went back to the hostel to grab my bike and bring it to the other hostel I stayed at the other night which is where i’ll be staying tonight. I unloaded a few things and decided I was going to go check out another waterfall today. I rode up about 10 minutes north of town and went for a 15 minute walk to  find it. There were lines of people going in and out. I couldn’t believe how busy this place was and it was only 10:30am. I had a feeling I wouldn’t stay long. I got there and yeah it was packed. I had a vision of hanging out there on a rock napping most of the day working on my spanish but nope that wasn’t going to happen.

I hung out there for 20 minutes and swam a bit. The water was really really cold and I enjoyed it. It was the coldest water of the trip. I got bit by more bugs and then walked back out to the bike. When i got back to my hostel i saw a guy i met a few nights ago and he told me the hostel has this special potion they made up to repel the mosquitoes and it worked like a charm for him. I lathered myself up with it and decided today was going to be a lazy day just laying by the pool at the hostel. That’s exactly what I did the rest of the day. I would lay on the net 10 feet off the ground reading my kindle, passing out every now and then and when I would wake up covered in sweat I would jump in the pool. Rinse and repeat the whole day! I did that for about 5 hours. Oh, it was perfect. People at home were talking about a snowstorm they’re getting tonight. Suckers! Hah

I made a few phone calls, video calls, sent a few pictures of people to make them hate me regarding their living situation and mine today. Mission accomplished. I washed my clothes in the rover which meant taking my blue linen shirt with my towel and just dipping it in the river. Looks like I’m good at wearing this stuff for another 3 days and my towel doesn’t smell anymore so I can use it to dry myself off after going for a swim now. I did a little push up workout. I’m excited to get to Cartagena tomorrow night to do 2-3 salsa classes a day and go to crossfit once a day hopefully.

After laying in the sun all day I went out for a little sandwich at the breakfast shop which they are usually quick with. I was meeting two friends in Santa Marta tonight so I got back to the hostel and threw some jeans on over my shorts and rode down into the city. Ugh i miss riding my bike with no luggage on it. It’s so much faster and nimble and I actually get to ride how I want. I was getting low in the turns ripping around everyone. I miss this so much. The weather slowly got warmer and more humid as I came off the mountain. I parked near the center in the city and went for a walk to the pier to get some mangos and meat sticks. I walked around a bit, got hit on by some prostitutes, the new norm now. I went back to the center and met up with Daniella and Nick. We sat down for dinner. It was so nice to see friends. I’ve seen Daniella around the skydiving world for a bit now but never really talked to her until this summer up north in Niagara Falls at a skydiving event. Same with Nick, I’ve talked to him a little bit here and there but never really got to know him. They are such good, honest, fun people. I like them alot.

We chatted for a while over dinner and laughed a lot. I bought dinner for them since Nick had to deal with bringing all my heavy motorcycle stuff down with him. I told them I knew a good spot for gelato after and they knew of one too. Funny how we all had the same favorite gelato shop in the whole city. We stuffed our faces, walked around a bunch and told stories. Ugh I loved every second of it. I’m going to be sad when I leave. While eating ice cream i heard some guy talking serbian. So I asked him where he was from in Serbian and the look on his face was hilarious. We chatted for a few minutes. He was from Montenegro but lived in Ohio now and he comes to Colombia every now and then because he loves it here so much.

We walked around another hour or so and found him in a park near where I parked my bike. This guy can talk forever and has some good stories. We chatted with him for about 30 minutes and then we parted ways. I made plans with Daniella and Nick to go to the beach tomorrow and then I would ride down to Cartagena after the beach where I would stay for three nights. I got on my bike and had a lovely ride back up the mountains in the dark. I watched a little netflix and passed out.

Day 71

Day 71 1/5/2022

Odometer   31,790 – 31,800  ——– 10  Miles (9100 Miles Total)

Minca, Colombia

Slept like a baby last night and I was surprised to see 8:15 on my phone when I woke up. My plan today is to go for a long hike and switch hostels. But I’m going to try to leave all my stuff in the locker at the hostel I’m at right now so I don’t have to haul everything down the block to the other hostel. Hopefully they don’t catch me!

I got up this morning and had some breakfast at the hostel which was free. I laid in a hammock for a bit just being a lazy fat ass. Ugh this is life. I walked up to the counter and asked the girl about the hike I wanted to do to Los Pinos. its on a mountain with a beautiful view of Santa Marta and the city by the ocean. She told me it’s 3 hours from Marinka waterfall. She did it in 2.5 since she’s fit. I made an interesting face doing some math and said 1:15. She said no fucking way. Challenge accepted. She told me not to cheat on the times and I showed her my Garmin watch. She believed I wouldn’t cheat. What am I going to cheat for? I’ll only be cheating myself if I do that. She told me she’ll give me a chocolate bar on the house if I do it in 1:15.

I packed up 2 liters of water and my Canon 5D. I took my bike into town to get breakfast since I was still hungry. I was sitting in the breakfast joint I was at yesterday and a woman came in asking how long until they took her order. We started chatting. She’s from Ukraine. I told her to wait a few minutes since they’re really slow here. She invited me to sit with her and chat while we waited for our food. We chatted about all kinds of things and she’s been to 80 countries! I’m so jealous. I can’t wait to experience all of that. Hi Iryna! Sorry for the bad sandwich recommendation! I gave her my website so she will be reading this. She was telling me she knows some Ukrainians that have been to every country in the world. That’s insane. 180 countries. Jesus Christ what these people have seen must be incredible. We chatted for about 90 minutes while we waited for our food to come out and pay for it.

I ran off in a hurry to get this hike done. I rode up to the waterfall and parked. My maps.me for the first time had a hike all wrong. It was telling me I had to start the hike from the waterfall which the guys at the parking lot told me no. Oh well. I started walking up the dirt road hoping I’ll actually even find the viewpoint. I put my phone away since I had no direction at all from it on this hike. I noticed google maps said the distance was 5.6Kms. That’s 3.3 miles or so. If that was right I’d have to keep an avg of 20 minutes per mile to make my time. Easy enough. I was climbing and climbing and climbing and took out google maps after about 30 minutes. There’s a road going to the top that’s complete trash. They have a bunch of hostels up there where motorcycles are transporting people up top for a small fee. Google said I was way off course and the time and stance kept getting longer. Shit. I won’t make it at this rate if it’s more than 3.5 miles. I picked up the pace and was nearly speed walking uphill.

I passed a few trucks bringing people down and they confirmed I was on the right path. I was now at 1:05 and 4.5 miles. I can’t believe I made this hike so quickly with 2000′ of gain so far. I met a couple that spoke some English and they told me 5 minutes more a few minutes later. I started to run. My watch said 1:15:30 when I came around the corner and saw the viewpoint. Boom. I hope the chick throws me some free chocolate. Haha

It was a lovely hike. So quiet. I only passed two couples on the way up. When I got up there I was a bit chilly with my linen shirt that was covered in sweat along with my shorts and socks. My legs have literally maybe 150 mosquito bites on them and this bug spray I bought hasn’t been doing shit. My legs look nasty like I have a disease of some sort. I sat up there for about 5 minutes and took some pictures and videos. The view was incredible. You can see Santa Marta and the next city over with all the big buildings on the water with the mountains on either side of the city. Beautiful! The view was worth it but I’m happy I can crush some elevation and get some good cardio in this morning.

I started the hike back down and my knees were fine but my crotch had a bad rash with blisters from the mush lining of the shorts I was wearing. They always do this when I get them wet, especially if I go swimming in them. Nothing I could do about this but just deal with the pain but god damn it was bad. About 40 minutes on the way back down one of the motorcycle taxis stopped behind me and said jump on. I asked him how much and he said $2. Deal! I hopped on the back and this guy could ride. Two up on a little 125cc Chinese bike. He was ripping down this mountain with us both on there. We were bottoming out left and right. I can’t believe these bikes last so long. He had 10,000kms on it which is 6,000 miles. We made it to the parking lot where my bike was at the waterfall. I jumped off and paid him, walked over to my bike and opened the top box and he gave me the funniest look ever. I asked him if he wanted a ride to the bottom and would charge him $1. He laughed pretty hard.

I got on the bike and rode it down the long dirt road to my hostel. As I went for a walk to the “secret spot” which is a 5 minute walk to a deserted part of the river by the hostel and jumped in fully clothed with my shoes on. I needed to wash my shoes since they were filthy. The freezing cold water felt so good on all the bug bites. I washed my linen shit for the third time in a river this week and it was holding up well. No smell or anything and I haven’t even used soap. This stuff is as solid as wool except way more expensive. I laid out by the pool for a bit to dry off and hung my clothes to dry.

After a little while I went upstairs to my locker and changed into dry clothes, no one caught me yet with the locker situation. I took the bike back into town to get a huge huge late lunch. Two Chicken chipotle sandwiches. The girl serving me thinks I’m nuts eating so much food! After this I just switched hostels, walked around town a bunch, sat in the center and worked on my Spanish on Duo Lingo and had some snacks around town. The mosquito bites on my legs are getting really bad. There really isn’t a spot on my leg from my shins down that doesn’t have a bite. My ankles and legs are so swollen and hot that I’m actually losing mobility from how swollen they are. I’m gonna go get some cream in the morning for them. While I was in bed watching Netflix they started to itch so bad so I had to make periodic runs to the river in front of the hostel to just stand in the water since it felt so good there.

That was my day.

Day 70

Day 70 1/4/2022

Odometer   31,780 – 31,790 ——–  10 Miles (9090 Miles Total)

Santa Marta, Colombia – Minca, Colombia

I slept pretty well at the hostel which I was surprised at. I got up at about 7:30, took a cold shower, packed up in a rush and grabbed my bike from the parking garage. I loaded up and got the hell out of town ASAP. The ride out was windy and ugly. I couldn’t wait to get out of the city. I had a 45 minute drive to Minca but it was only 10 miles away. Once I got up out of the city it got cool so quick and the roads were small and twisty. I got up a few miles and this was my jam. I’m so happy I was able to get out of that traffic jam in the city. I pulled into town and made it to my hostel. It’s such a small town with maybe a few hundred residents here. It’s mostly tourists here but it’s still old school in the town. The roads are all dirt, cold showers and small food shops everywhere. I’m probably gonna stay here for 4 nights because it’s so nice and quiet. I checked in at 9am, dropped off my bags and went out to explore.

I went out for breakfast at a nice little spot where I met some people from the UK, Texas, Toronto, Puerto Rico and some locals of Colombia. We all chatted from our separate tables, I ate shit walking over to one of their tables and almost broke my foot on a step. I had a huge breakfast which was eggs, arepas and French toast with a coffee. I’m starting to drink coffee now because it’s so delicious down here. I can’t believe it. So weird

I hung out there till about 10:30 chatting with the new friends I made and working on my blog as much as I could fit in. I uploaded and edited a bunch of pictures. I went back to the hostel to grab my towel, camera and shoes so I could go explore some things around town. I hear there’s a bunch of nice waterfalls here, plenty of rivers to swim in and some hiking. I asked the girl at the front desk of the hostel where to go first and she recommended a local waterfall. She said I shouldn’t take my bike up there because it’s so steep and it’s all dirt roads. It’s about a 90 minute walk from the hostel she said and there’s really no parking at the bottom of the dirt road leading up to it. I decided to do some googling and found out you can take a motorcycle taxi from the center of town for $1 to the waterfall. Wait, a motorcycle taxi can take you up there but this girl doesn’t think I can go with my bike? Pshhhh. I got right on the bike and rode over there. There were a bunch of little Chinese made motorcycles coming off the dirt road into town so I figured I had this. The road was about 5 miles of real shit dirt roads with a bunch of river crossings. There were a bunch of concrete small 2′ wide paths every now and then I tried to stay on. I made it to the top in 15 minutes. Not bad. I passed a bunch of the motorcycle taxis with tourists and locals on the back.

I parked my bike and had another 10 minute walk where you definitely can’t take a motorcycle up since the road was so steep and shitty. I got up to the waterfall and paid my $1 to get in. it wasnt much special but I was covered in sweat from the walk up the steep hill. I checked out both waterfalls, jumped in the lower one which was freezing and then went up a few steps to a small restaurant where they had nets overhanging the waterfall you can just go lay on. I hung out on one for about an hour working on the blog and taking a small nap. There’s some brutal small bugs here that are worse than mosquitos which ate me alive even after I put bug spray on. I’ll post pictures of it so you can see. I feel like I don’t even know that they are biting me. I just looked down at my ankles and they are bleeding everywhere. I rode back down the dirt road and stopped for some pictures. I went back to the hostel to hang out by the pool and work on the ballot some more and edit some more pictures. This shit takes up so much time it’s insane. I did a small workout at the “gym” they have by the river. I went for a walk through the forest along the river to a “secret spot” the hostel had on their property. It was a nice deep part of the cold river and I went for a swim there, took some photos and met some people from Netherlands, LA, and a local going for a swim as well. The girl from LA told me about a bunch of cool places to check out in the area since she’s been here for two weeks.

I went back to the hostel and some guy from Germany asked to use my computer to make a Pdf with his information to extend his visa for a few more months in Colombia. We ended up chatting for a while about all kinds of things. I went up to my bike after and decided it was finally time to reorganize part of my luggage since it was an absolute mess in there. I worked on my bike for a while remounting my GoPro on the handlebars so I can actually start taking some video with it. It’s been over 2 months and I haven’t really even taken the camera out to record anything because of where I had the camera mounted on the bike. I hid a few tools under the seat, moved around my hand guards since they moved when I crashed in Costa Rica and they weren’t protecting my hands from all the bugs smashing into my knuckles. I found a nail in my tire which luckily didn’t pierce through thank god! A bunch of organizing and fixing small things later I was finally done with that. I’ve been holding off on those small things for a few weeks now.

I showered, loaded up with bug spray and went for a walk to town where I had some delicious dinner. My hostel only had room for one night so I made reservations for another hostel tomorrow night and then the next night I have to go back to my original hostel. I’m going to look into hostels at Cartagena for the weekend. I don’t know how much i’ll like it there since it looks like it’ll be the most expensive hostel i’ve stayed at this whole trip.

Bike parking on a dirt road in town when I went out for breakfast.

Parking at the waterfall. One is not like the others.

The cool nets hanging over the waterfall people were hanging out on.

Small nail in my tire that didn’t give me a flat.

The ride on the dirt road coming down from the waterfall.

One of the many river crossings on the dirt path.

Road was pretty shitty. I was happy I didn’t have my luggage on for this.

Day 69

Day 69 1/3/2022

Odometer  31,381 – 31,780  ——–  399 Miles (9078 Miles Total)

San Gil, Colombia – Santa Marta, Colombia VIA THE HOTTEST ROAD ON PLANET EARTH.

The plan today was to ride 6.5 hours to Aguachica. The hostel owner told me the road from there to Santa Marta is weird, which was another 7 hours I think. He also said it’s pretty sketchy so I should sleep in Aguachica and then make a straight run for Santa Marta the next day. I packed my stuff up pretty early and hit the road. I stopped for breakfast pretty early in the ride. GPS said I was going to get to Aguachica at 2:36pm so I can take my time getting there. I worked on my bike for a bit while I was waiting for my breakfast to come out.

Back on the road and I was a bit annoyed. It seems I was climbing a big mountain uphill and there were sooooo many trucks I just couldn’t even stop to take pictures because all my hard work passing these trucks and cars would go to waste if I stopped. The toll booths here are awesome. Motorcycles get to pass in a small motorcycle lane to the right and it’s free for us. That makes me happy since there’s a bunch of toll booths with huge lines we all get to skip riding on the grass on the side of the road! It’s like a free for all for the most part with bikes here which is my type of riding! I rode through the grand canyon of Colombia which is why I took this route. The view was absolutely breathtaking as I came around a corner and saw the view I’ve been waiting for. I feel like I’m back in the alps in Europe. This was the best ride I’ve taken on this trip so far with the views. I stopped a few times to take pictures and videos of the views. I drove down into the valley at one point and then back up the other side. About an hour later it went to a boring straight highway and the temps hit 100 degrees. Well shit that turned bad pretty quickly. I wish I could ride some lovely roads for a whole day but that might be asking too much.

I was on a highway for the next few hours passing tons of trucks and other traffic. There was no shade the whole ride and it was consistently 100 degrees. The heat was terrible and I was wearing my full winter black riding gear. I got near Aguachica at 1pm and decided I would go right for Santa Marta. I typed in the city on my phone and it said the arrival time was 8pm. Shit 8 more hours of riding? I’ll take it. This is what I’m built for. I can probably knock another hour or two off that time knowing me. I stopped at a bridge on the ride at about 2:30pm and literally rolled off the side of the bridge a few feet down into a river where other people were swimming. They all gave me a funny look. Some white guy pulls over, strips down to his underwear and rolls off a bridge into a river…they must think i’m crazy! hah

I laid in the water for 5 minutes and climbed back out, put my clothes on and kept riding. I stopped for water at one point and bought two cold bottles. One went into my stomach and the other went into my jacket to cool me down. I got back on the road a bit cooler now. About 20 minutes down the road I see two bikes with a lot of gear on them. I get closer and one of the license plates isn’t yellow which is Colombia’s plate color. I get closer and it’s a Washington state plate! Shit!!! I haven’t seen another traveler in months. I pull up next to him and throw him a fist bump and pull up ahead and point to the back of my bike to show him my plates. He was so excited too! He opened up his shield on his helmet and pointed up ahead and yelled out florida! I passed two cars and saw another big bike but it had Colombia plates. I ride next to them for a few minutes and on my phone I spell out my email address and show them my phone. The girl on the back takes a picture of my phone and I wait for the email. I bet they were going to Santa Marta as well. I rode next to them for a bit and then gave them a salute and took off. They were riding much slower than me.

I was doing really well with time. About 20 minutes later the couple on the BMW sent me a message on IG and we planned to meet up for dinner. I was excited to hang out with some other riders. I ended up getting to Santa Marta at about 5:30pm. I can’t believe I shaved 2.5 hours off my time. I impressed myself and I didnt even have to ride at night time. I followed the GPS to the hostel on google maps and it brought me maybe 20 minutes away from the coast which was weird since on Hostelworld it showed the hostel was right near the water. It was the wrong address. So in the 100 degree heat I had to find the place with all this traffic from hell on google maps going back and forth between the maps on the hostel world. Every time I googled the hostel name it brought me to the first place I was shown to go. I was starting to lose my patience. After 45 minutes in traffic and going the wrong way down one way streets and riding down streets where I wasnt allowed to drive I got to the hostel. I was covered in sweat and couldn’t wait to jump in the pool at the hostel.

I waited at the front desk for about 20 minutes before the receptionist had a second to talk to me. She asked me if I booked a reservation and when. I told her I booked it this morning for 3 nights. She started to beat around the bush and said they were all sold out. I said yeah that’s cool i’m not asking for three nights I already booked three nights this morning and paid a deposit on Hostelworld. She then told me they had a mistake with the website and were all sold out. You gotta be fucking kidding me. I said it would have been nice to get a phone call telling me this 12 hours ago. I opened up Hostelworld and every hostel in the city was sold out now. I was pissed. She pointed me to another hostel down the block that wasn’t on Hostelworld. I packed my bike after unloading it all and drove two blocks down.

Well shit now I’m 100% in the ghetto and this place is pretty bad. I go into the office and wait 20 minutes before anyone will even talk to me. I just want to know if they have room so I can make other plans. The only other available hostel in the hostel world app was $132 a night. I had to figure something out fast as it was dark now. I finally was spoken to and they had a room for $10. Amazing. I thought to myself, give me one night and I’m never coming back to this city. Me and about 6 other French people were here from the first hostel and we were all annoyed. Once we all paid and checked in they showed us our room. Imagine a small room, and I mean small. There were 4 bunk bed footprints in the room. Each bunk bed was stacked 4 beds high. We barely had any room to walk to our bunk beds let alone we had no place to put our backlogs and luggage. So now we’re all crammed in there barely with any room to walk between everyone’s luggage. There’s no AC, it’s dark in the whole hostel to the point where we need flashlights to see anything in our bags. There’s no outlets to charge anything and this just straight up sucks. I unload all my stuff in the room and go take a shower. Next thing you know half the hostel sees each other naked with the curtains blowing up in the wind since all the showers are in the same room. Were all laughing.

I got in touch with the guy who I met on the road this afternoon and I was going to walk to his hostel and get food before I was meeting with them for dinner. I was starving. I walked down 2-3 blocks to the not so sketchy area and walked down to the water. I got two little sticks of meat and potatoes from a guy on the side of the road and bought two bags of mangoes that were already cut up. There were some gorgeous women hitting on me while I was walking and I wasnt sure if they were prostitutes or normal people. Either way I felt like an asshole for ignoring them all. I hope they were prostitutes and I wasnt just being an asshole to normal people. I finally met up with the couple and we went out for a nice dinner. He was originally from Spain and lived in Miami for 30 years, his girlfriend was a local in Bucaramanga, Colombia. We chatted for about an hour and then split up. I got back to my hostel which I’m happy I didn’t get mugged on the walk back. I booked a hostel for a night in Minca which was about 45 minutes away in the mountains. I heard they have waterfalls, rivers and hikes. Sign me the hell up right now. I couldn’t wait to get out of this city and the heat. I worked on my blog for a bit at the hostel and I was surprised the WIFI even worked. I made sure I had my hostel booked and crawled into bed to go to sleep.

Day 68

Day 68 1/2/2022

Odometer   31,340 – 31,381—-  41 Miles (8679 Miles Total)

San Gil, Colombia

Alejandra was the name in my dorm room that was there with her family. I told her this morning that her dad is a champ at snoring. She replied that it was my mom! I couldn’t believe it. Haha. I was supposed to be on my way towards Santa Marta today but I said fuck it. I wanted to spend another day here since it’s so nice and quiet.

I went out to the market again this morning. I got myself two more cups of fresh squeezed OJ and a smoothie. The smile that gets lit up on my face when I get told the price for that will never stop. I got myself a chopped up mango on the street for like $.50 and shoved that thing down my throat. I wanted to eat like 6 of them but I couldn’t. I finally found a place after walking around for 15-20 minutes that served eggs for breakfast. Most people just have juice and pastries here I think? I had a lovely view of the town center while I worked on the blog a bit and studied my Spanish! I got back to the hostel and all I had planned was to ride up to Barichara to watch the sunset where there was the view of the mountains I went to yesterday. It was hot today and I had nothing to do so I was gonna take the bike back to Curiti and go swimming as long as I wanted. As I was getting on my bike Alejandra told me her and her family were on their way there. So I started up the bike and raced over there. The thought of hanging out with people there was nice since I got a bit bored yesterday all alone there all day. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find them there since there’s no cell reception up there so I rode up there as hard as I could. As I’m getting to the end of the dirt road to park I just passed them walking! So close to spending another day there alone!

They stopped for some mangoes with lime, salt and pepper. I’ve noticed it’s a trend since I got to Central America. Then they stopped for some smoothies and beer before we walked down to the river. We all hung out and chatted a bit. Well I was talking to Alejandra while she was translating to her parents at times. We all took the walk down to the river where me and Alejandra split up from her parents and went upstream a bit where all the kids went I guess. There was some music, a bar, and plenty of cliffs to jump off of into the water. We jumped in the water to cool off and I saw her eying the cliff. I asked her about it and she seemed skeptical. Not on my watch. Little did she know she was 100% jumping off this 15′ cliff into the water. We both went up. I jumped off and then it was her turn! She was a bit nervous but she sent it 2 minutes later and nailed it! I went back up and jumped in a few more times. People were throwing some fun moves into the water. It was fun to watch. We chatted for a while while lounging on the rocks with half our bodies in the water trying to stay cool since it was so hot out.

We had a few beers and got some free ones from people leaving their spot and suddenly realized her parents said we were supposed to be back by them at 3pm to leave. It was now 4pm. Her poor mother was probably thinking this American idiot murdered my daughter! We walked back to their spot and all three were just staring in our direction waiting for us to pop over the path. Sorry mom! We hung out for a bit and then walked back to the dirt road where everyone parked. I’d see them back at the hostel since they were taking an overnight bus back to Bogota at 10PM. I got a lot of funny looks from people while passing hundreds of parked bikes. I wish I could just blend in sometimes instead of getting so much attention with my big bike that you don’t ever see down here really. While I was riding back there was a tonnnnnn of traffic leaving town. At the end of the town I noticed a lot of people. As I creeped up closer I saw maybe 100 people wearing costumes. Weird. I got even closer and they had a rope up making people pay to leave. Ugh fuck. I got to the side and showed them I had nothing in my short shorts pockets. They wanted me to rev my engine for them. So I did it a few times, then one guy wanted to do it, he revved it a few times. This was really getting annoying. They let me pass through without paying and as I was creeping away slowly one of them ran up and ripped a bunch of hair out of my leg and then ran away. Ugh I would love to get off my bike and knock this fucking guy out but there’s too many of them. I got back to my hostel, showered up and rode up to Barichara to watch the sunset but I got up there a bit too late. I hung out for a few hours up there and had some food. I got back to my hostel and made a few phone calls and talked to some people at the hostel. I said my goodbyes to Alejandras family and herself. I’ll miss them, they are so sweet! I worked on the blog for a while and uploaded pictures and that was my night!
